Cardinals Stadium

LOCATION: Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue, Glendale, Arizona

CLIENT: Arizona Tourism and Sports Authority

CIVIL ENGINEER:

YEAR(S): 2001 - 2006

DESCRIPTION: The new NFL Cardinals Stadium, with its retractable roof & field, is unlike any other stadium in North America and a marvel of design, engineering, and technology. The overall cost was approximately $450 million. The stadium will encompass 1.7 million square feet of space.

SCOPE OF SERVICES:

Environmental

Phase I Environmental Site Assessment of a 240-acre parcel of agricultural land selected as the location for the TSA Multipurpose Facility (Cardinals Stadium).  Our historical review indicated a portion of the property had once been a dairy farm.  We recommended additional assessment to further investigate recognized environmental conditions indicated in our assessment.  GEC conducted a Phase II ESA including a geophysical survey, soil sampling and testing, exploratory trenching.  A former trash pit area was identified, evaluated, and remediated prior to development.

Geotechnical Engineering

GEC conducted a preliminary    investigation for the City of Glendale.  Subsequent to the selection of this Site for the multipurpose facility, we    conducted additional preliminary and final investigations for Hunt Construction Group, Inc.  We have advanced over 40 test borings across the Site to depths ranging from 40 to 99 feet below the existing ground surface for use in the design of the foundations for the main structure and other improvements across the Site.  The maximum column loads (dead plus live) for the main bearing elements are estimated to be in the range of 2,000 to 15,000 kips.  GEC provided design recommendations for shallow foundations on undisturbed natural soils to support the structure with   tolerable settlements.  Under a contract with the TSA, GEC is providing geotechnical engineering, and construction observation and testing services during the site       grading, MSE wall construction, and foundation construction to verify soil conditions, provide quality control (QC) testing, and to document conformance with the contract documents.

Construction Materials Testing

QA/QC on the Stadium, responsible for overseeing observation and testing of the mass grading and MSE wall backfill, testing of utility trench backfills, and special inspection of footing excavations.
